News Study Reveals CardiOmegia™ as a Promising Natural Solution for Cardiovascular Health

YANGLING, CHINA – A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers from the College of Food Science and Engineering at Northwest A&F University, in collaboration with Puredia Limited, published in Frontiers in Nutrition (Lin et al., 2022) has provided valuable insights into the protective effects of procyanidins extracted from CardiOmegia™ sea-buckthorn (SBP) against oxidative injury in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Study Overview

This study provides compelling scientific evidence that CardiOmegia™ sea-buckthorn procyanidins exhibit substantial protective effects against oxidative injury in vascular endothelial cells. The findings support the potential application of SBP as a natural, safe, and effective nutritional ingredient for cardiovascular disease prevention and overall vascular health support. Further research exploring the precise molecular mechanisms and clinical applications of SBP could lead to innovative and effective approaches to combat cardiovascular diseases naturally.

Key Findings

Procyanidins are bioactive polyphenolic compounds known for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Although procyanidins have been studied in various plant sources, research specifically focusing on sea-buckthorn procyanidins remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of SBP on endothelial cells under oxidative stress conditions induced by palmitic acid—a saturated fatty acid commonly associated with vascular oxidative damage.

Researchers found that treating endothelial cells with SBP (at concentrations up to 400 µg/L) significantly protected the cells without detectable cytotoxicity. SBP treatment effectively reduced oxidative stress markers, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage—an indicator of cellular membrane damage. Additionally, SBP helped preserve the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), a crucial factor for maintaining cellular energy and mitochondrial functionality.

Furthermore, nitric oxide (NO) production, essential for vascular relaxation and health, was significantly enhanced by SBP, counteracting the diminished NO levels typically observed under oxidative stress conditions. This indicates that SBP not only prevents cellular damage but also actively supports endothelial function.

To understand the underlying mechanisms, researchers examined key molecular pathways associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Results from western blot and qPCR analyses revealed that SBP likely confers its protective effects by modulating the p38MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway. Specifically, SBP treatment significantly inhibited the phosphorylation (activation) of p38 and NF-κB proteins, key regulators involved in endothelial inflammation and oxidative injury. Additionally, SBP treatment regulated the expression of important molecular markers such as LOX-1, ICAM-1, eNOS, and iNOS, further corroborating its protective role.
