New Study Reveals CyanthOx™ with superior antioxidant properties of high-purity oligomeric procyanidins for nutraceuticals product


A recent scientific study published in Current Research in Food Science successfully isolated high-purity oligomeric procyanidins from sea buckthorn berries cultivated on the high-altitude Qinghai Plateau, using an innovative green extraction method. This extraction technique, utilizing only hot-water extraction followed by macro-porous resin purification, achieved an impressive extraction rate of 9.1% and purity of 91.5%. The extraction process avoids toxic organic solvents typically used in industrial settings, aligning with modern sustainability standards.

Study Overview

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), traditionally recognized for its medicinal value, contains abundant bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. This research underscores the superior antioxidant properties of high-purity oligomeric procyanidins derived from sea buckthorn berries through a novel green extraction method. Given its significant antioxidant activities and protective effects against oxidative stress, SBP represents an excellent candidate for natural antioxidant applications in food additives, nutraceuticals, and functional food products. Key Findings

Detailed structural analysis employing Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) confirmed that the sea buckthorn procyanidin (SBP) primarily comprises oligomeric forms, including (−)-epicatechin gallate, procyanidin B, (+)-gallocatechin-(+)-catechin, and (+)-gallocatechin dimers. This unique composition underlies the powerful antioxidant capabilities of SBP.

The antioxidant potential of SBP was rigorously evaluated using established chemical assays, revealing extraordinary free radical scavenging capacities. Notably, SBP showed exceptional effectiveness against ABTS radicals—approximately 4.8 times more potent than vitamin C at equivalent concentrations. Moreover, combining SBP with vitamin C exhibited a significant synergistic antioxidant effect, with combination indices indicating strong synergy, particularly at higher vitamin C ratios.

Further validation of SBP’s antioxidant effectiveness was carried out through cellular studies using RAW264.7 macrophage cells exposed to oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Results demonstrated that SBP effectively increased cell viability, enhanced activity of crucial antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and significantly reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation markers (malondialdehyde, MDA). These findings strongly suggest SBP’s ability to protect cells from oxidative damage at the molecular level.
